Promise Rings

Promise rings are exchanged between couples for a number of reasons. For this reason, they are available in a variety of designs so they can fit any budget or purpose. Traditionally, a promise ring was given to a female when her intended agreed upon a marriage contract with her parents. This could be given at any time, even when marriage was not likely to occur for years to come.

During the 90s promise rings made a comeback when young couple began to use diamond promise rings to show that a future engagement was pending.

Diamond promise rings come in a variety of styles. They are often made of yellow or white gold, Sometimes they have a small diamond at the center of their band and other times they have a diamond surrounded by accent stones. They use many design elements like figurals and engravings, but hearts are the most popular.

Upon first glance many people would mistake a diamond promise ring for an engagement ring. However, there is a difference between the two. For one, a promise ring does not signify an immediate marriage. In fact, marriage is usually years away after the giving of a promise ring. Plus, some people give a promise ring to signify friendship, commitment or religious purity. Promise rings are also smaller in stone size, they are not set in an expensive metal, they cost less, are designed more simply and are worn by younger individuals.

Despite the fact that diamond promise rings are most popular, you do have alternatives. You can chose a metal ring with intertwined hearts, a ring with a birthstone rather than a diamond. Promise rings are very customizable and the design is largely based upon preference. However, to avoid assumptions it is best to stay away from wedding band designs and eternity rings.

There is no hard or fast rule as to when a person should give a promise ring. It should be given when a person feels a promise is made or when they want a symbol of a deeper commitment. It is ideal for young couples who cannot become engaged yet, but want to show they are committed to one another. Although you can give a promise ring anytime, birthdays, anniversaries or holidays present a wonderful opportunity to do so.

It is important to not that a promise ring is worn on the left hand. However, if does signify the intent to marry it should be worn on the right hand. This avoids confusion or further helps display the commitment between the giver and receiver of the ring.
